Welcome to CTP News, the monthly newsletter of the Cuba Transition Project (CTP) at the University of Miami's Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies (ICCAS). The CTP is funded by a grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

 

IRAN/CUBA SEMINAR

The Anti-Defamation League, in association with the University of Miami’s Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies (ICCAS), the Center for Hemispheric Policy, and the Sue and Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies held a panel discussion, The Influence of Iran in Latin America: The Venezuelan and Cuban Connection, on March 17, 2008.

Panelists included Carlos Alberto Montaner, renowned journalist; Patrick Clawson, Deputy Director for research at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and author of Eternal Iran: Continuity and Chaos; José Azel, Senior Research Associate at ICCAS; and Jaime Suchlicki, Director, ICCAS.

LECTURE ON CUBA'S FUTURE

Antonio Jorge, Senior Research Associate at ICCAS and Senior Academic Advisor for CTP, will speak on "What Can Cubans Learn from Transitions in Eastern Europe?" on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, 6:30-9:00 p.m. at Casa Bacardi, Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies, University of Miami. The lecture will be held in Spanish. It is free and open to the public. To reserve, please call (305) 284-2822.

TELECONFERENCE WITH CUBAN YOUTH

In collaboration with the U.S. Interests Section in Havana, the CTP held a video teleconference with 12 students/youths in Cuba on March 18, 2008. The Cuban youths spoke with six students from CAUSA, a group of young Cuban-Americans from the University of Miami who met at ICCAS for the event. In the candid exchange, the Cuban participants spoke of their dissatisfaction with the government and on the rising of youth activism on the island.



CUBA CONFERENCE CALL

On Tuesday, April 8th the Cuba Business Roundtable will begin a quarterly series of live public telephone conference calls hosted by some of the top ICCAS Cuba experts and special guests. This special series will begin exploring the challenges and opportunities that businesses will encounter in a post-Castro, post-embargo Cuba.

Experts and guests include: Jaime Suchlicki, Director, ICCAS; José Azel, Senior Research Associate at ICCAS; and Pedro A. Freyre, shareholder and Co-Chair of the Global practice group in the law firm of Akerman, Senterfitt.

The live conference call will begin promptly at 11:30am.
